As football season kicks off, many of us are building our fantasy rosters. But here’s a thought — what if we built a Fantasy Safety Team for our workplace? Whether you’re on a construction site, in a manufacturing plant, or running day-to-day operations, the structure of a winning football team can teach us a lot about building a winning safety culture.

In this playbook, Safety Leadership serves as the head coach, and Operations takes the field as the quarterback. Why? While safety leaders draw up the plays and set the vision, operations leaders lead the charge on the field, rallying their team and executing the plan. And when the team wins, the quarterback — not the coach — gets the spotlight. That’s how you build buy-in.

The Fantasy Safety Roster

🏈 Head Coach – Safety Leadership

– Develops the game plan for keeping everyone safe.
– Studies “opponents” — hazards, incidents, industry trends — and adjusts strategy accordingly.
– Calls the plays but trusts the quarterback to run them.

🏈 Quarterback – Operations Leaders

– Reads the defense (hazards) and makes real-time decisions.
– Motivates the team, keeping everyone aligned and engaged.
– Takes ownership of execution — and the credit for the win.

🏈 Defensive Line – Safety Committee

– The first line of defense against hazards.
– Blocks risks before they reach frontline workers.
– Keeps communication open between the players and the coaches.

🏈 Special Teams – Board of Directors / Executives

– Provide the resources, budget, and support for the big plays.
– Show up visibly for the moments that matter.

🏈 Wide Receivers & Running Backs – Employees

– Execute plays with precision.
– Stay alert for hazards and adjust quickly.
– Give feedback from the field to improve future plays.

🏈 Fans in the Stands – Clients, Customers, Community

– Watch your performance and expect a safe, professional operation.
– Your “win record” affects their trust in your team.

Why This Works

A great team wins because the coach and quarterback trust each other. Safety leadership provides the vision and tools, while operations leaders bring it to life — their way, with their people. When operations gets to take ownership and credit for safety wins, it shifts safety from being “the safety department’s job” to being everyone’s job.

So, as you set your fantasy football lineup this fall, take a moment to think about your fantasy safety team. Is your quarterback ready to lead? Is your defense strong? Is your coach trusting the players to run the plays? That’s how you put points on the board — and keep your team safe for the entire season.
